Q2 2020 Poultry and Egg Production and Inventory in BARMM
Poultry and egg production in BARMM increased by 8.51 percent in Q2 2020
The total production of poultry and eggs in BARMM increased by 8.51 percent in the second quarter of 2020, that is from 1,998.59 metric tons (MT) in the second quarter of 2019 to 2,168.67 MT. This was brought by the increase in the production of Chicken which posted a negative growth rate of 24.95 percent.
Majority of BARMM’s poultry production in Q2 2020 was composed of Chicken
The average production of poultry in BARMM increased by 17.56 percent. This is composed of Duck and Chicken. About 95.17 percent of the total poultry production in BARMM in the second quarter of 2020 was contributed by Chicken, while the remaining 4.83 percent was composed of Duck.
Egg production in BARMM decreased by 2.12 percent in Q2 2020
Egg production in BARMM decreased by 2.12 percent in the second quarter of 2020. This also includes Chicken Eggs and Duck Eggs. There were more Chicken Eggs produced in BARMM than Duck Eggs during this period with corresponding percentage shares of 81.56 percent and 18.44 percent.
Chicken inventory in BARMM decreased by 2.97 percent as of 01 July 2020
Chicken inventory, specifically for Native/Improved, decreased by 2.97 percent, that is from 1,828,022 birds as of 01 July 2019 to 1,773,763 birds as of the same period in 2020. This was brought by the decrease in Basilan by 9.25 percent, Lanao del Sur by 6.94 percent and Sulu by 2.69 percent. On the other hand, Chicken inventory in Maguindanao and Tawi-Tawi increased by 36.28 percent and 4.49 percent, respectively. There is no Broiler and Layer Chicken recorded in BARMM during this period.
About 38.97 percent of the total Chicken inventory in BARMM during this period was in Lanao del Sur; while the 26.72 percent was in Sulu. The remaining 18.17 percent, 8.32 percent and 7.82 percent were in Basilan, Tawi-Tawi and Maguindanao, respectively.
More than half of the Duck inventory in BARMM was in Maguindanao
Duck inventory increased by 24.16 percent, from 138,180 birds as of 01 July 2019 to 171,558 birds in the same period of 2020. Inventory in Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao and Tawi-Tawi also increased by 17.72 percent, 38.00 percent and 23.59 percent, respectively. On the other hand, inventory in Basilan and Sulu posted the corresponding negative growth rates of 7.22 percent and 0.26 percent.
More than half or 62.48 percent of the total Duck inventory in the region was in Maguindanao. This was followed by Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Basilan and Tawi-Tawi with corresponding percentage shares of 12.04 percent, 11.22 percent, 7.39 percent and 6.87 percent.
NOTE: All regional estimates discussed in this article is exclusive for the original ARMM territory only. However, ARMM legally does not exist as of writing, thus the term BARMM is used to avoid confusion among the readers.
TECHNICAL NOTES
This statistical report covers four (4) livestock (cattle, carabao, goat and swine) commodities.
The data on these commodities include: volume of production (in metric tons), number of animals slaughtered (in head) and inventory of animals (in head).
The data on inventory and volume of production are taken from the regular surveys conducted by PSA. The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) covers one (1) of the four (4) replicate samples of the Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS). It consists of 15,069 sample households in 1,051 sample barangays nationwide for Carabao, Cattle, Goat and Swine.
To supplement the statistical data on livestock sector obtained from the said survey, Compilation of Data from Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plants (CDSPDP) is also done. The CDSPDP covers around 1,387 Accredited (AAA and AA) and Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRMEs) nationwide. These data are compiled from the administrative records of the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) and the Local Government Units (LGUs).
Concepts and Definitions
Backyard Farm – any farm or household, whether farming or non-farming, tending at least one head of animal and does not qualify as a commercial farm.
Inventory – the actual number of domesticated animals present in the farm as of a specific reference date.
- Beginning inventory is the number of live animals present in the farm at the beginning of the reference period, i.e. for January to June 2016, the beginning inventory is as of January 1, 2016; for January to March the beginning inventory is as of January 1.
- Ending inventory is the number of live animals/remaining stocks present in the farm at the end of the reference period, i.e. for January to June 2016, the ending inventory is as of July 1, 2016; for January to March, the remaining inventory is as of April 1.
Locally Registered Meat Establishment (LRME) – slaughterhouse, meat processing plants, meat cutting plants and cold storages that are allowed to operate by the city/municipal government but are not accredited by NMIS.
Slaughterhouses (SH) – premises that are approved and registered by the NMIS and LGUs in which food animals are slaughtered for human consumption.
Slaughtered in Slaughterhouses – the number of animals slaughtered in accredited (AAA, AA, A) slaughterhouses including number of animals slaughtered in LRMEs.
Volume of Production – the quantity of locally-raised animals disposed for slaughter which includes animals shipped-out for slaughter. This is expressed in number of heads, or in metric ton, liveweight equivalent.
