CORN

The Q3 2019 corn production at 434.50 thousand MT, was higher by 39.57 percent than the Q3 2018 level of 311.32 thousand MT. Harvest area increased to 125.85 thousand Ha from previous year’s record of 101.57 thousand Ha. Yield per hectare improved from 3.07 MT to 3.45 MT or by 12.64 percent.

Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao contributed significant increment in production at 91.75 thousand MT and 31.36 thousand MT, respectively. The positive growths in Lanao del Sur can be attributed mostly to the increase in harvest area. In addition, yield in Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao also increased during this period.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Production refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. For palay and corn, harvest area refers to the actual area harvested/to be harvested during the reference quarter.

Estimates of production and harvest area of palay and corn are generated from the Quarterly Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS) which has four survey rounds in a year, that is, January, April, July and October. The following are the data taken from these surveys:

  1. Estimates for the current quarter;
  2.  Estimates for the next two quarters based on: standing crop and planting intentions.
