Age and Sex Structure of Marawi City (Based on the Results of 2015 Census of Population)

Population reached 201,785 persons

According to the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN 2015), Marawi City, the capital of Lanao del Sur, has a total population of 201,785 persons, of which 51.5 percent were males and 48.5 percent were females. The population pyramid of the municipality of Marawi City is presented in Fig. 1. It shows that larger percentages of the population in the municipality are in the younger age groups.

Almost three out of 10 completed elementary as their highest educational attainment

Of the total population 5 years old and over by highest grade/year completed, three out of ten completed elementary grade (i.e, either 1st – 4th grade, or 5th to 6th grade or graduate) as their highest educational attainment followed by high school (27.3 percent), while 7.2 percent has no grade completed.

26.2 percent of gainful workers in Marawi are managers

Of the gainful workers 15 years old and over by major occupation group, 26.2 percent are managers. About 15.6 percent are plant and machine operators and assemblers,13.3 percent are service and sales workers and 12.7 percent are skilled agricultural forestry and fishery workers.

Sex ratio stands at 94 males for every 100 females

Of the household population, 49.7 percent are males and 50.3 percent are females. These figures resulted in a sex ratio of 94 males per 100 females.

Children aged 5-9 years old comprised the largest age groups

Children aged 5 to 9 years old comprised the largest age group that accounted for 14.4 percent of the household population. This is followed by 1-4 years old and 10-14 years old age groups comprising 12.6 percent and 12.5 percent of the household population, respectively.

More than half of the household population can vote

The voting age population or persons that are 18 years old and over, accounted 51.9 percent of the household population in Marawi. Of these voting population, 48.1 percent are males and 51.9 percent are females.

Two in 100 persons are senior citizens

People who are regarded as senior citizens are those aged 60 years and over. Two in every 100 (2.2 percent) of the household population are senior citizens. Among the senior citizens, 53 percent are males and 47 are females.

Dependency ratio stands at 75 dependents per 100 persons

The young dependents (0-14 years old) comprised 41 percent of the household population, while the old dependents (65 years old and over) comprised 1.2 percent. The working-age population (15 to 64 years old) accounted for 57.8 percent. The overall dependency ratio of Marawi is approximately 75. This indicates that for every 100 working-age population, there are about 75 dependents (71 young dependents and 4 old dependents).

46.2 percent of the population are married

As to marital status, of the total population 10 years old and over, single/or never persons registered the highest proportion (48.8 percent) in Marawi and the second highest proportion are married persons (46.2 percent).

Attendance rate is highest among 10-14 years olds

Household population aged 5 to 24 years old are considered in determining the school attendance rate. Based on the POPCEN 2015, there were 95,391 persons who were 5 to 24 years old in Marawi and 71.9 percent of them were attending school in school year 2015-2016.

Simple literacy rate was recorded at 97.4 percent

A person can be considered as literate if he/she is able to read and write a simple message in any language or dialect. The literacy rate of Marawi is 97.4 percent among the 140,827 household population aged 10 years old and over. Fig. 6 showed that the literacy is high at the lower age-group and decreases as age is increased.

Most of the household heads are 30-39 years old

Of the 4,668 households head in Marawi, 31.3 percent belong to the 30-39 years old age group. Moreover, about 26.4 percent and 18.1 percent are 40-49 years old and 20-29 years old, respectively.

Total population is the sum of the household population and institutional population. It also includes Filipinos in Philippine embassies, consulates, and missions abroad.

Marital status is the personal status of each individual with reference to the marriage laws or customs of the country.

Grade/year completed the highest grade or year completed in school, college or university.

Voting age population (VAP) refers to the set of individuals that have reached the minimum voting age for a particular geographical or political unit.

Overall dependency ratio the ratio of persons in the dependent ages (under 15 years old and over 64 years old) to persons in the economically active or working ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population.

Household population comprises of persons who belong to a household, the basic criterion of which is the usual place of residence or the place where the person usually resides.

School attendance rate the proportion of persons 5 to 24 years old who were attending school during the School Year June 2015 to March 2016 to school-age population (5 to 24 years old).

Simple literacy rate the proportion of persons aged 10 years and over who are able to read and write a simple message in any language or dialect.
