Age and Sex Distribution for the Municipality of Buluan (Based on the Results of 2015 Census of Population)

Population reached 50,008 persons.

Buluan is a 4th class municipality in the second district of the province of Maguindanao with seven (7) barangays and served as the capital of the province. According to the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN 2015), it has a total population of 50,008 persons. There are more males (50.9 percent) than females (49.1 percent) in this municipality. Fig. 1 shows the population pyramid of Buluan Municipality, it indicates that larger numbers or percentages of the population in the municipality are in the younger age groups.

Two in five completed elementary.

Of the total population 5 years old and over by highest grade/year completed, two out of five (approximately 47.2 percent) in Buldon completed their elementary grade (i.e, either 1st – 4th grade, or 5th to 6th grade or graduate).

Three in ten are classified as skilled agriculture, forestry and fishery workers.

Of the gainful workers 15 years old and over, skilled agriculture, forestry, and fishery workers comprised the largest occupation group in the municipality. Service and sales workers and elementary occupation groups are the second and third largest groups accounting for 14.4 percent and 14.0 percent.

Sex ratio stands at 103 males for every 100 females.

Of the household population, males comprised 50.9 percent while females are slightly lower at 49.1 percent. These figures resulted in a sex ratio of 103 males per 100 females.

Children aged 5-9 years old comprised the largest age groups.

In the Municipality of Buluan, children aged 5 to 9 years old comprised the largest age group that accounted for 15.2 percent of the household population and those aged 10 to 14 years old with 14.3 percent as the second highest proportion. In both age groups, more males than females were recorded.

Almost half of the household population can vote.

The voting age population or persons that are 18 years old and over, accounted 49.2 percent of the household population (24,557 persons) in the Municipality of Buluan. Both males and females comprised 50.0 percent each of the group.

Two in 100 person are senior citizens.

People who are regarded as senior citizens are those aged 60 years and over. Two in every 100 (roughly 2.1 percent) of the household population are senior citizens. Among the senior citizens, 52.1 percent are females and 47.9 percent are males.

Dependency ratio stands at 26 dependents per 100 persons.

The young dependents (0-14 years old) comprised 13.6 percent of the household population, while the old dependents (65 years old and over) comprised 1.2 percent. The working-age population (15 to 64 years old) accounted for 55.7 percent. The overall dependency ratio of Buluan is 26. This indicates that for every 100 working-age population, there are about 26 dependents (24 young dependents and 2 old dependents).

Half of the population is married.

As to marital status of the household population 10 years old and over, married persons registered the highest proportion (50.5 percent) in the Municipality of Buluan and the second highest proportion are single/or never married persons (45.6 percent).

Three in four attending school are younger age.

Household population aged 5 to 24 years old are considered in determining the school attendance rate. Based on the POPCEN 2015, there were 24,903 persons who belong to this population in Buluan and 70.8 percent, that is, 17,638 of them were attending school in school year 2015-2016.

Simple literacy rate is 90.9 percent.

A person can be considered as literate if he/she is able to read and write a simple message in any language or dialect. The literacy rate of the Municipality of Buluan is 90.9 percent among the 35,541 household population aged 10 years old and over. Fig. 6 shows that the literacy is high at the lower age-group. It also showed that literacy rate decreased as the age-groups increased, except among 35-39 years old, which posted a higher rate than the preceding age group.

Six in 10 household heads are 30-49 years old.

Of the 7,288 number of households head in the Municipality of Buluan, six out of 10 (64.4 percent) belong to the age groups 30-39 years old (32.2 percent) and 40- 49 years old (32.2 percent). About 15.6 percent are 20-29 years old and 13.6 percent are 50-59 years old. On the other hand, household heads aged at 80 years old and over comprised 0.2 percent.

Marital status is the personal status of each individual with reference to the marriage laws or customs of the country.

Grade/year completed the highest grade or year completed in school, college or university.

Voting age population (VAP) refers to the set of individuals that have reached the minimum voting age for a particular geographical or political unit.

Overall dependency ratio the ratio of persons in the dependent ages (under 15 years old and over 64 years old) to persons in the economically active or working ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population.

Household population comprises of persons who belong to a household, the basic criterion of which is the usual place of residence or the place where the person usually resides.

School attendance rate the proportion of persons 5 to 24 years old who were attending school during the School Year June 2015 to March 2016 to school-age population (5 to 24 years old).

Simple literacy rate the proportion of persons aged 10 years and over who are able to read and write a simple message in any language or dialect.
