Women and Men in the Province of Basilan (Based on the Results of 2015 Census of Population)

The results of the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN 2015) showed that the total population of the Province of Basilan reached 346,579 persons in 2015, which were only projected at around 336,900 persons. More than half (50.2 percent) of this population are women. By 2020, the region’s total population is projected to reach 385,300 persons, still with more women than the men.

The household population of Basilan reached 346,579 persons in the 2015. Of this household population, women comprised 50.2 percent, while men are slightly lower at 49.8 percent. These figures resulted on a sex ratio of 99 men per 100 women. More women were registered in majority of the municipalities, except in the City of Lamitan, Municipalities of Lantawan, Hadji Mohammad Ajul and Tabawan Lasa. (See Table 2 and Fig. 1).

In the province of Basilan, women outnumbered men. This observation is true among the ages 15 to 49 years old and 65 to 80 years old and over. The number of youth in Basilan, aged 15 – 24 years in 2015, reached a total of 68,722 comprising 9.2 percent of the region’s total population. With this number, 50.9 percent are women and 49.1 percent are men. Among the working age population (15–64 years old), voting age population (18 years old and over) and senior citizens, results registered more women than men (Refer to Table 3).

Women outnumbered men in all categories of marital status in Basilan, except for single or never married persons (Refers to Table 4 and Fig. 2). Widowed women exceeded that of men by 193.3 percent.

The top 10 religious affiliation in the province of Basilan is shown in Table 5 and Fig. 3. Of the total population of the province, 88.0 percent were Muslims, of which 50.5 percent were women and 49.5 percent men. This was followed by Roman Catholics including Catholic Charismatics at 10.7 percent, with more men than women.

Household population aged 5 to 24 years old are considered in determining the school attendance rate. Based on the POPCEN 2015, there are 164,475 persons who are 5 to 24 years old in Basilan and 62.0 percent, that is, 102,000 of them were attending school in school year 2015-2016. There were more women who are currently attending school, comprising 50.1 percent of the household population 5 to 24 years old.

A person can be considered as literate if he or she is able to read and write a simple message in any language or dialect. The literacy rate of Basilan based on the POPCEN 2015 is 85.6 percent among the 210,484 household population aged 10 years and over. Women have a lower literacy rate of 85.0 percent than that of men with 86.2 percent.

In the province of Basilan, among gainful workers 15 years old and over, men dominated women by number. However, by major occupation group, there were more women among the managers, professionals group and service and sales workers observed than its male counterpart. There were more men than women among the rest of the occupation group.

However, among overseas workers, of the total population 15 years and over, 53.8 percent were women. As for the highest grade/year completed by these overseas workers, there were more women than men in all categories, except in elementary and post-baccalaureate (Table 10).

Of the 59,860 number of households in ARMM, only 12.3 percent were headed by women. This accounts to only 7,878 women household heads. In all age-group, women as head of the household were reported less than the men counterpart (See Table 11 and Fig. 4).

Technical notes:

Total population is the sum of the household population and institutional population. It also includes Filipinos in Philippine embassies, consulates, and missions abroad.

Household population comprises of persons who belong to a household, the basic criterion of which is the usual place of residence or the place where the person usually resides.

Marital status is the personal status of each individual with reference to the marriage laws or customs of the country.

Religious affiliation is a particular system of beliefs, attitudes, emotions, and behaviors constituting man’s relationship with the powers and principalities of the universe.

School attendance rate the proportion of persons 5 to 24 years old who were attending school during the School Year June 2015 to March 2016 to school-age population (5 to 24 years old)

Simple literacy rate the proportion of persons aged 10 years and over who are able to read and write a simple message in any language or dialect.

Grade/year completed the highest grade or year completed in school, college or university.
