Women and Men in Lanao del Sur (Based on the Results of 2015 Census of Population)

The results of the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN 2015) showed that the total population of the province of Lanao del Sur reached 1,045,429 persons in 2015. More than half (50.2 percent) of this population are comprised of women. The total population of the province is projected to reach 1,225,700 persons by the year 2020, still with more women than the men.

The household population of Lanao del Sur reached 1,045,429 persons in 2015, of which women comprised 51 percent and men were at 49 percent. This results to a sex ratio of 96:100 which means that there are 96 men for every 100 women in the province. On the other hand, men from age groups 45-79 outnumbered the women by 5.2 percent in the total age group. (See Fig. 1 & Table 1).

About 51.16 percent of the household population 10 years olf and over in Lanao del Sur were women, while the remaining 48.84 percent were men. Women also outnumbered men in all types of marital status except for common-law arrangement and unknown. The number of widowed women were higher than its men counterpart in this category by 44.36 percentage points. On the other hand, there were more men living in a common-law or live-in marital arrangement than women.

Women outnumbered men in the younger age groups among household population in the province (See Fig. 3and Table 4).

The top 10 religious affiliations in Lanao del Sur is presented in Table 5 and     Fig. 4. Of the total population in the province, 93.6 percent are Muslims, of which, women are slightly higher (51.1 percent) than men (48.9 percent). This is followed by Roman Catholics (including Catholic Charismatic) at 4.9 percent of the total population in the province, wherein women are less than the number of men for this by 696 persons or by 1.4 percent.

Household population aged 5 to 24 years old are considered in determining the school attendance rate. Based on the POPCEN 2015, there are 494,010 persons who are at the schooling age in the province and 69.6 percent, that is 343,782 of them were attending school in school year 2015-2016. There are more women who are currently attending school comprising 70.3 percent of the household population 5 to 24 years old. The trend is also true across all age groups.

A person can be considered as literate if he is able to read and write a simple message in any language or dialect. The literacy rate of the province based on the POPCEN 2015 is 94.1 percent among the 727,267 household population aged 10 years and over.

Among the gainful workers 15 years old and over, men dominated women by number. More women were reported among the professionals and not reported group workers comprising 78.1 percent and 52.0 percent, respectively of these occupation groups. Whereas, among the major occupational group, managers reported the highest percentage for women, while men excelled in skilled agricultural, forestry and fishery workers.

It was recorded in the province that there were more women than men who were academic degree holders and who have pursued post-baccalaureate studies. Also, there were more women than men who completed high school and post-secondary levels of education.

Among overseas workers of the total population 15 years and over, 57.0 percent were men. As for the highest grade/year completed by these overseas workers, there were more women who completed post-secondary, college undergraduate academic levels.

Of the 160,132 number of households in Lanao del Sur, only 11.9 percent were headed by women. This accounts to only 13,414 women household heads. Households headed by women are less than its counterpart across all age groups.

  • Household population comprises of persons who belong to a household, the basic criterion of which is the usual place of residence or the place where the person usually resides.
  • Marital status is the personal status of each individual with reference to the marriage laws or customs of the country.
  • Religious affiliation is a particular system of beliefs, attitudes, emotions, and behaviors constituting man’s relationship with the powers and principalities of the universe.
  • School attendance rate is the proportion of persons 5 to 24 years old who were attending school during the School Year June 2015 to March 2016 to school-age population (5 to 24 years old)
  • Simple literacy rate is the proportion of persons aged 10 years and over who are able to read and write a simple message in any language or dialect.
  • Grade/year completed is the highest grade or year completed in school, college or university.
