STI College Cotabato City to represent BARMM in 25th Philippine Statistics Quiz

Bai Zam Zam C. Datumanong, a freshman BS Computer Engineering student of STI College Cotabato City, topped the 25th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Regional Championship in BARMM held at Alnor Convention Center, Cotabato City on 12 November 2019. Datumanong will represent the region and will compete against 16 regional PSQ champions in the country in the 25th PSQ at the national finals on 29 November 2019.

A total of 10 contestants from six (6) schools in Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur contended for the regional championship.

The champion garnered a total of 18 points from three (3) rounds of PSQ, that is three (3) points in Round 1, five (5) points in Round 2, and 10 points in Round 3.

Krizzia Mae A. Orejas, BS Statistics student of Mindanao State University (MSU) – Marawi, got the second place with 15 points. Moreover, Rosenipah M. Alauya, BS Accountancy student of Rc Al-Khwarizmi International College Foundation, Inc., and Faizah A. Abbas, BS Chemical Engineering student of MSU – Marawi, tied in third place at 14 points.

The 2019 PSQ is the 25th in the series. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the central statistics authority of the government on primary data collection and, the Philippine Statistical Association, Incorporated (PSAI), a non-stock, non-profit organization of professional statisticians from government and nongovernment agencies and the academe are the organizers of this year’s event.

The objective of PSQ is to identify and nurture talents especially in the field of statistics. That contributes to the advocacy in the use of statistics for evidence-based decision making. Results of the contest can also provide indications of the effectiveness of the statistics component of mathematics as a subject of the secondary curriculum.
