PSA Designated Spokespersons complete Presentation Skills Training
A total of 33 Designated Spokespersons of different Offices and Services of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Central and Regional Offices completed the Training on Effective Presentation Skills last 27 to 29 March 2019 in Makati City. Ms. Farhana Jane S. Linso, Statistical Analyst, represented PSA-BARMM in this training. The Knowledge Management and Communication Division (KMCD) of PSA Central Office initiated this activity as part the agency’s External Communication Plan aimed at bringing statistics closer to the people. Mr. Gem Eiroll D. Manalo of Batangas State University served as the resource person in this training.
The development of listening, speaking, and presentation skills vis-à-vis learning the specific persuasion strategies are essential to effective communication and influencing. As such, this course aims to equip participants with the necessary skills in order to effectively communicate the message to their target audiences. Participants are expected to learn practical tips and techniques for planning key messages, structuring delivery, and creating interesting, entertaining, and persuasive presentations.
The training was composed of four parts. First, the participants were introduced to the Princples and Key Concepts of Interpersonal Communication, including the Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication. Then the resource person lectured on the application of these principles and concepts in verbal and non-verbal platforms, presentation tools, audience handling and overcoming nervousness. With knowledge on these principles and concepts and how to apply them, the participants were able to proceed to the discussion on planning, preparation and evaluation of an effective presentation. Lastly, the participants were divided into seven groups, each of them was tasked to demonstrate an effective presentation through the application of the concepts and principles that they have recently learned in this training.
Ms. Linso was grouped with the designated spokespersons of PhilSys Registration Office, Macroeconomic Accounts Service, PSA-XII and PSA-IX. They were the first presenter for the last part of the training, which is the practicum. The group decided to present the Overview of the Republic Act No. 11055 and its implementing rules and regulations, specifically on the Registration Centers. The audience for this particular presentation was defined by the presenters as PSA employees, thus they were expected to have prior knowledge on the said topic. Several issues and concerns were raised by the audience and were answered fluently by the presenters. After the presentation, the group and other participants gave their comments and suggestions to the demonstration. Mr. Manalo also gave his inputs and analysis. The group received positive feedbacks and their overall presentation was perceived to be a demonstration of an effective presentation.
