PSA-ARMM officials and employees attend 2018 PSAI Annual Conference

PSA-ARMM officials and employees attended the 2018 Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) Annual Conference, with the theme “Emerging Trends in Statistical Development”, last September 19-21, 2018 at Bohol Tropics Resort, Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

The group of PSA-ARMM who attended this event was composed of Mr. Razulden A. Mangelen, OIC-Regional Director of PSA-ARMM, together with Mr. Mahmur H. Sarail (Chief of the region’s Statistical Operations and Coordination Division (SOCD)); Provincial Statistics Officers (PSOs) of PSA-ARMM Provincial Offices, namely Ms. Noronisa D. Macadadaya of PSA-Lanao del Sur, Mr. Akan G. Tula of PSA-Maguindanao, Mr. Medzhor A. Tan of PSA-Sulu, and Mr. Masil H. Mohammadsha of PSA-Tawi-Tawi; as well as some PSA-ARMM employees such as Mr. Naldo G. Pendaliday (Senior Statistical Specialist), Mr. Suharto M. Sabdula (Statistical Specialist II), Mr. Dynrazil A. Nuron (Statistical Analyst), Ms. Farhana Jane S. Linso (Statistical Analyst), and Mr. Nurosalam C. Caludtiag (Assistant Statistician).

Four simultaneous trainings were conducted on the first day, September 19. OIC-RD Mangelen, SOCD Chief Sarail, PSO Macadadaya and PSO Mohammadsha attended on the Training on Spatial Statistics lectured by Mr. Dennis P. Dizon. Mr. Dizon discussed the contextualization of data analysis with location. Participants were ablee to learn how to calculate and map basic spatial statistics using ArcGIS, as well as other common statistical applications such as MS Excel and R.

Moreover, OIC-PSO Tula, PSO Tan, Mr. Pendaliday, Mr. Sabdula and Mr. Caludtiag attended the Training on Infographics lectured by Mr. Gian Louisse A. Roy. This training enabled to participants to learn how to clearly and concisely present data to a general audience in an interesting and insightful way; and teach them some tips and tricks in creating information dissemination materials.

Furthermore, Mr. Nuron and Ms. Linso attended the Training on Correcting Common Misconceptions in Statistics: For K-12 lectured by Dr. Josefina V. Almeda. Dr. Alemda elucidated in this training the common statistical concepts by discussing their underlying theories and correcting common misconceptions. Topics include hypothesis testing, p-value, Sloven’s formula, among others.

There was also a training on Descriptive and Exploratory Techniques in R lectured by Ms. Charlene Mae Y. Celoso, but no PSA-ARMM employee was able to attend. The training introduced the particiopants to data science analytics that will apply descriptive statistics and exploratory data analysis in R software.

PSA sponsored the plenary discussion on the second day, September 20. It was composed of eight scientific sessions focusing on Inflation, Latest Technology, Redesign, Statistical Models in Practice, Spatial, The Environment, and Student Papers. On the second day, the Geodata Systems Technologies, Inc. sponsored the plenary session with panel discussion on Data Privacy.

During the awarding ceremony, Usec. Lisa Grace S. Bersales, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General of PSA, requested OIC-RD Mangelen to receive the Plaque of Appreciation on behalf of PSA as one of the organizers of this event. This serves as an acknowledgement for the participants of PSA-ARMM, who stayed until the last part of the program, for their well observed commitment to the event.
