PSA strengthen ties with SUCs in Tawi-Tawi
Asec. Romeo S. Recide, the Deputy National Statistician of Sectoral Statistics Office of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA); Dr. Abubakar S. Asaad, Regional Director of PSA-ARMM; Mr. Masil H. Mohammadsha, Chief Statistical Specialist (CSS) of PSA-Tawi-Tawi; Engr. Medzhor A. Tan, CSS of PSA-Sulu; and other personnel from PSA paid courtesy visit to Dr. Mutti A. Asaali, President of the Tawi-Tawi Regional Agricultural College (TRAC) and to Dr. Mary Joyce Z. Guinto-Sali, Chancellor of the Mindanao State University – Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-TCTO). These two separate meetings happened last February 28, 2018 in Tawi-Tawi as part of the initiatives of PSA in strengthening ties with SUCs in the provinces of ARMM being the major data partners and producers of future competent statisticians in the region.
Dr. Asaali reported that TRAC is still at the transitional stage due to recent changes in leadership. He also mentioned that the decrease in the number of students engaging to agricultural sector is a national trend but then he is confident that students are still interested in agriculture as reflected by the consistent high enrollment rate in TRAC, though, he said further, this may also be attributed to relatively low tuition fee of TRAC.
Asec. Recide explained that PSA has a very wide domain and opportunities in the agency are not limited only to statisticians. He said that as the primary statistical institution in the country, PSA produces statistics in economic and social sectors, including agricultural statistics that TRAC students can use in their studies. He said further that PSA believes that agriculturists are the ones who can understand best the concepts of the sector’s statistics.
