ARMM employees and officials commences the month-long celebration of the 28th National Statistics Month with the theme “Facts and Figures for the Future: Statistics for Evidence-Based Decisions Towards AmBisyon Natin 2040”, last October 2, 2017 at ORG-ARMM Compound Cotabato City. The celebration was hosted by the Regional Statistics Committee (RSC) of ARMM, that is chaired by the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) to the ARMM Regional Governor represented by Executive Secretary Atty. Laisa Masuhud-Alamia; and co-chaired by the Regional Planning and Development Office of ARMM (RPDO-ARMM) represented by Executive Director Engr. Baintan A. Ampatuan and the Philippine Statistics Authority in ARMM (PSA-ARMM) represented by Regional Director Dr. Abubakar S. Asaad.

National Statistics Month or NSM is an annual event observed nationwide geared at promoting, enhancing and instilling nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and values of statistics to our society and to seek the cooperation and support of other government agencies, the private sectors and the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.

“AmBisyon Natin 2040 is the collective long-term vision of the Filipino people for ourselves and our country that by the year 2040, we will have a Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na Buhay,” Dr. Asaad said.

According to him, quality and reliable statistics is used to formulate the appropriate programs and services in order for us to crop the progress towards AmBisyon Natin 2040. Statistics are also gathered, analyzed and interpreted to evaluate the level of effectiveness of these programs.

AmBisyon Natin 2040 focuses mainly on the field of construction, manufacturing, utilities (i.e. electricity, gas and water), connectivity (i.e. roads and bridges, transport system and communication), education, tourism, and other services like agriculture, health and financial services. Dr. Asaad explained that PSA plays a significant role in this endeavor as the agency collects all the data needed on the said industries in the regular statistical activities conducted monthly, quarterly, semi-annually and annually. Other line agencies, particularly the members of RSC also have important contributions in the provision of information.
“Statistics is not just a number, statistics is power,” Atty. Alamia said.

Atty. Alamia emphasized further the importance of accurate statistics in the implementation of effective governance. ARMM used statistics in the “ghost busting” in the Department of Education in ARMM (DepEd-ARMM). The government discovered padded data of students and teachers in the region, most especially in the province of Lanao del Sur. These manipulated data also manipulate the budget structure of the government which resulted into corruption.

The Executive Secretary reminded every employee that the success on having a clean information of the region does not rely only on the officials of the line agencies, but actually depends on the efficiency of the employees and beneficiaries of programs and services. Thus everyone is obligated to contribute to this accomplishment for the good of the government. As Engr. Ampatuan emphasized, we should not wait for 2040 to have a Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na Buhay.

Dr. Asaad announced the upcoming activities to be anticipated in this month-long celebration of NSM. The Statistical Operations and Coordination Division (SOCD) of PSA-ARMM will be conducting Statistical Quiz and Poster/Slogan Making Contest for students from selected schools in the region and Dr. Asaad will be training PSA-ARMM employees on Statistical Data Management; Civil Registration and Administrative Support Division (CRASD) of PSA-ARMM will be lecturing on Civil Registration for students and general public; PSA-ARMM will be having Tree Planting activities; and all line agencies are invited to participate through hanging of tarpaulin and joining in Statistical Exhibit Contest. Moreover, PSA-ARMM and RPDO-ARMM will be spearheading the Culmination Program for the 28th NSM on October 30, 2017.

In relation to the Statistical Exhibit Contest, Engr. Ampatuan encouraged the line agencies to give emphasis on the statistics of Marawi City and Lanao del Sur. Display the right statistics and right information about Marawi City and Lanao del Sur.

“Show the right statistics at the right time,” Engr. Ampatuan said.

The ceremonial releasing of balloons officially opened the celebration of 28th NSM.
